The Western Reaches of the Ozark Highlands

The idea to bring forth
The Other OZ
surfaced from a Call to Action in early August,
a Call from deep within
&
expressed through 3 streams.

Stream 1
came from afar,
from talkers and writers
anchored out East,
warning of the rise
of authoritarianism
in the Republic.

&
Apple News screens
pointed in alarm
to ardent ’n strident reports
about the possibility of civic chaos  
&
print magazines, delivered by the USA Postal Service to a rented box a few miles to the south, pretended to delve deeper into the existential threat
&
a pair of warm-off-the-press newspapers, tossed miraculously every Sunday morn onto the gnarly front drive of our rural hacienda, sought to tell another version of the same dire story.

Learning all these wicked things,
we
[at our refuge in the Ozark Highlands]

we [did U?]
took [take] seriously
the ceaseless warnings
&
began to prepare.

The Other Oz,
an idea becoming a concept, surprised us
&
emerged » the first sensible act of preparation
&
continues to be
an act of promise
in a way-too-warm autumn.

Stream 2
flows from civic devotion
— these past 33 months —
to the men
of Returning Home,
a big-city place not far away in miles from 3 Dog Acres —
yet
so far hidden
from the public eye
to be invisible
on the human plane

Returning Home,
a time-stamped haven of sorts,
known by some
as a halfway-house,
by others
as a re-entry center,
better yet
a hard-scrabble way home
for the felon,
who,
having served his time,
is released under parole
to a place of figuring out.

nurtures
a forever-held
primal passion:
the desire to communicate,
one with another,
in any way that works.

Today we choose
the World Wide Web
as a viable platform
for another quest.
We cannot be alone.

Like the Ancients.
& all human generations after,
we follow
a known set of ways 'n means
to be
united or torn apart
by how we communicate,
one to another,
in an indifferent,
mysterious Universe
— fraught with peril
& balanced, held together
with undying Love.

the Vortex spins
a necessary force
of intellect & emotion
&
the spinning
urges us at The Other OZ
to explore in New Light
a style
of World Wide Web design
— Brutalism —
adapted
to
The Scrolling Ways
of ever shrinking screens,
